Gateway to Excellence is a strong statement encapsulating the various cultural gates in this Festival City.  By definition a gateway is a means of achieving a state or condition.  In this reference the term gateway is representative of achieving a state or condition or portal through to excellence in Risk Management.

Equally important the use of the term Gateway pays homage to Edmonton’s reputation and place in business and travel as the “Gateway to the North”

In the 1930’s Edmonton became the Gateway to the North, flying medical supplies, food, and mail to remote northern communities. Located on the 53rd latitude, Edmonton is a haven for summer and winter activities, with 17 hours of daylight in mid-summer and the magical, night aurora borealis (Northern Lights) during the peak activity period in mid-winter.  Currently, Edmonton is the northernmost North American City with a metropolitan population over 1 million.  It continues to be the Gateway to the North as it is the staging point for large-scale oil sands projects occurring in northern Alberta and large-scale diamond mining operations in the Northwest Territories.

Visitors arriving in Edmonton will travel north into the City Centre via Gateway Boulevard.  Gateway Boulevard like the road travelled toward Excellence is a one-way street.   Once a traveller has embarked upon this route, there is no return except to leave the path completely.

Thanks to the sponsorship of FM Global Insurance and the support of the RIMS Canada Council, we are pleased to host our 7th Annual McGannon Foundation 5km Fun Run/Walk.   Registration forms will be available online or on the Saturday before the event at the same time that you pick-up your material for the conference.  All participants will receive a complete race kit which will include a souvenir T-shirt.

All the proceeds collected will go the the William H. McGannon Foundation.   The foundation is an initiative of RIMS Canada Council and was established to provide resources in the form of grants to advance risk management by way of education, research, mentorship programs and work experience programs.
